5th Grade Art

CIC is proud to present the work of the fifth graders in Mr. Elliot and Mr. Smeader's classes. The following art projects seek to stimulate their multiple intelligences as they engage in integrating elements of art, application of media and art techniques for expressing their artistic skills.

The artist's world is limitless.
 It can be found anywhere,
far from where he lives or a few feet away.
It is always on his doorstep.”

Quarter 4: March - June

The Carving project.
Again children meet with plaster as media of expression. This time they will be using the substractive technique of sculpture: carving.

The first step was to sketch their subject matter. This last week of April, they will be carving their plaster.

Space/depth in art.
Children were through a guided observation of the visual ways in which depth is seen in real landscapes and how it is created in painting.

Size, overlapping and color tone were the elements they had to combine in order to achieve the goal in their work: creating the illusion of space or depth. See some of their works:

Quarter 3: January - March

The Sculpture Experience.

Clay work.

To close the quarter, students were given a clay challenge. They  were to mold a clay sculpture that included aspects as negative space (empty, or hollow spaces) organic and geometric shapes, and implied texture. Here are some of their masterpieces.

They really enjoyed this session. Look at part of the process for some:

I'm so proud!!!!

Plaster work.

This new quarter, 5th graders are going through the sculpting process (planning, creating, finishing it) while they prepare to work with plaster of Paris. Students were organized in groups to have a prior experience with the media.

Sketches were made and children built their structures (armatures) for their sculpture. Later they were asked to wrap it with wet fabric to later apply the plaster with teachers help.

Applying the plaster...

Drying the plaster indoors.

Finishing stage to come....

The 3D line/color experiment.
Children were presented with a project to create a three-dimensional effect through lines while they experimented with color. The results were these very good works of art.

Quarter 2: October-December

Fiber Art Project: Yarn Painting

Students were introduced to the yarn painting technique and after a long process here are some of their works of art. I honestly congratulate all and each of them for being such hardworking. Enjoy!

Quarter 1: September-October

Moving Lines Project

This project was a lengthy and interesting one having fifth graders experiment with line movement and line type integration. I got the inspiration from the art teacher Ms Jodie Victoria (see original idea here: http://amazingartadventures.blogspot.com/2012/10/moving-lines-3rd-grade.html).

Students first activated their knowlegde on line types and were asked this question: Can a drawn line move?

After this, they were shown several works of kinetic art by Venezuelan and foreign artists. They were then asked to create a design that integrated several line types and to cut it in strips to later rearrange the strips on a new background, thus producing the visual movement.

The results were beyond my own expectations, and theirs I think. These are their marvelous works of art. Enjoy some of them.
